Diving / Jump in water with arm straight up with body streamline
Diving or jumping into water with arms straight up and the body streamlined is often referred to as a “pencil dive” or “vertical entry.” This technique is commonly used in various aquatic activities, such as diving, swimming, and even by lifeguards when they need to enter the water quickly and safely.
Here’s a breakdown of how to perform a proper pencil dive:
Steps to Perform a Pencil Dive:
Danger !!! do not dive in a shallow pool!!!
Preparation phase
Go to the edge of the pool
Stand on the edge of the pool so that your toes can grab the edge of the pool
Jump phase:
Sit down approximately so that the knee is bent at 90 degrees
Make a jump up and forward
During the flight, the hands are at the top
The face looks forward
The body is straight
Entry to the water phase
With a straight body we begin to enter the water holding our hands at the top until the whole body is submerged under the water
Tips for an Effective Pencil Dive:
Practice on Dry Land:
Before attempting the dive in the water, practice the streamlined position on dry land to ensure your body alignment is correct.
Start from Lower Heights:
If you are new to diving, start from the side of the pool or a low diving board and gradually work your way up to higher platforms as you gain confidence and control.
Focus on Entry:
The key to a successful pencil dive is a clean entry with minimal splash. Practice keeping your body tight and straight throughout the dive.
Safety Considerations:
Check the Depth:
Ensure the water is deep enough for a safe entry. Pencil dives are typically performed in deeper water to avoid injury.
Avoid Obstacles:
Make sure the area is clear of obstacles and other swimmers before diving.
Warm Up:
Perform a proper warm-up before diving to prevent muscle strains and injuries.
Practicing the pencil dive can improve your overall diving technique and water entry skills, making it a useful addition to your aquatic repertoire.
